![]() ![]() Instead of the expected idea or theory, Black Hat removes his hat to reveal a tiny cannon on his head which blows away Cueball and his computer desk. ![]() Cueball, thinking Black Hat means "headcanon," inquires what Black Hat's new idea is. In this strip, Black Hat tells Cueball that he has a "new headcannon". ![]() The word headcanon is a compound of "head" and "canon," and is a term used among online discussions that means "canon that only exists within one's head." In other words it refers to belief or theory about a fictional universe that has not, strictly speaking, been proven to be true within the fiction (some headcanons can even contradict the fiction). This comic strip uses a play on the homophonic relationship between " canon", the literary term, and " cannon", a projectile weapon. Title text: The nice thing about headcannnons is that it's really easy to get other people to believe in them. ![]() ![]() ![]() Linda did a great job not following the obvious path that most writers would take. Furthermore, she hypnotize’s the reader deeper with these hilarious anecdotal tales of Elly“s previous employment, each more clever than the last.Īs far as the rest of the story goes, I was completely blindsided. This, coupled with the ominous introduction of Doctor Stein, was a perfect lure into Linda“s world. This is something every adult can relate to. Linda starts with a clever introduction: Elly searching for jobs and getting frustrated. Each panel, with the exception of Doctor Stein“s scenes, had a fully detailed background. As for Linda“s art, well it was simply stunning. Her dialogue was filled with voice, opinion, and bias unique to each cast member. The narrative was concise, clear, and powerful. ![]() Very rarely does a creator that can do both the art and writing hit the ground running like this. Blood Stain, volume 1, from Linda Sejic was a fantastic read. ![]() ![]() Ward employs three different voices, rather than Faulkner’s fifteen, to tell a story. ![]() In Sing, Unburied, Sing, it is one of two grandparents, Mam, who is lying at the edge of the next world, but for the entire book. Faulkner’s laying-down person is Addie, who leaves the physical world early in the narrative. ![]() Both novels are round-trips that become marathons. (This won Ward the National Book Award for fiction.) Sing, Unburied, Sing makes reference to As I Lay Dying, though it doesn’t need Faulkner to make its bones. Salvage the Bones (2011) follows Esch, a pregnant teenager who loves Greek mythology, living in the days before Hurricane Katrina. Ward’s 2008 debut, Where the Line Bleeds, is about twin brothers struggling to get by in Bois Sauvage. Faulkner reimagined Lafayette County, in the northern half of Mississippi, while Ward has used Bois Sauvage in three novels to stand in for the small towns of the Mississippi Gulf Coast, which could include DeLisle, where Ward grew up. ![]() Faulkner had Yoknapatawpha County and Jesmyn Ward has Bois Sauvage-neither real, both true. ![]() ![]() ![]() NOAA monthly averages for the Washington, DC area airports (DCA and IAD) from 1991 to 2020 show January and February nearly tied as the snowiest months of the year (with February one tenth of an inch ahead).
